DESCRIPTION
Although outsourcing creates high profit margins in companies such as The GAP and NIKE, allowing them to become very successful, they have been accused many times of using child labour. Nike and GAP are all examples of successful outsourcing, all of these outsourcing deals have been looked down upon by North Americans because of the local job losses. Classically, outsourcing and offshoring have been thought of as only Asian countries producing cheap retail products for the world’s richer consumers to purchase, however the outsourcing business has expanded to include many other areas.
SKILLS
A common practice now is having whole customer service departments being outsourced to India. This is creating a problem amongst consumers who are having a harder time understanding or relating to the customer service representatives, however the corporations are saving so much money by doing this, that they still find it pays off. Information Technology departments are doing the same thing as the customer service departments by outsourcing some of their projects as well. IBM recently sold the personal computer department of their computer engineering and manufacturing departments to a company called the Lenovo Group in China (in which they will hold a 18.9% minority stake), where IBM made a long term contract to buy back the personal computers produced at cost plus 3% (CNET News.com). This is an example of outsourcing by way of selling offshore and repurchasing for profits.
